Reopening Safety Guidelines

During this phase of Governor Pritzker's Restore Illinois Plan, businesses providing outdoor recreation are allowed to open with specific safety practices in place.

Reopening Peoria Zoo safely and successfully has required some modifications, careful observation and quick action if/when modifications are necessary.  Below is a list of changes in our current operations.

  • All visitors over the age of 2 must wear a face covering

  • Visitors must follow the marked, one-way path around the Zoo

  • No reentry will be allowed

  • Zoo closes at 5:00

  • There will not be indoor seating available

  • The following buildings are closed to visitors Tropics Building, Conservation Center, Tree House, Domestic Animal Barn

  • Gift Shop is open at 25% capacity

  • Lodge, Barton and Boardwalk Restrooms are all open to visitors

  • Trash can availability is limited (please take your trash with you, if possible)

  • No Interactive programs will be available at this time

In addition to operational modifications, there will be a few changes to the way visitors can interact with certain animals.  Research has shown that any mammal has the potential to contract the Coronavirus responsible for COVID-19. Some species have been identified as being more susceptible than others. Therefore, during the Zoo's initial reopening, we will strive to have at least a 6', open-air distance between visitors and mammals in the collection.  Further, the Tropics Building will be closed to visitors during this time.

Staff will continue their extensive cleaning efforts, which includes cleaning and sanitizing touch points on a regular basis throughout the day.

We are thrilled to be able to open Peoria Zoo to visitors once again!  We ask for everyone's patience and understanding as we continue to navigate this new normal.  As is always the case, it is the goal of Peoria Park District and Peoria Zoo to provide the best experience for visitors as possible.
